NASCAR is actually an acronym for the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing. The organization was founded in 1948 by Ed Otto and William France. The two men recognized the fact that people enjoyed watching car races, and did not need to be some commonality behind the racing industry to attract more riders and make races fair for those who entered. Having more who were willing to enter the races naturally increased the number of fans who were willing to pay to see – a natural step in the marketing of Nascar.
During the early years of Nascar racing, the cars were “strictly stock”, which means they were, basically, exactly as the manufacturer released them. However, some accidents convinced that in the control of the racing events that some safety modifications would be a prudent measure. It was not long before other amendments were allowed to increase the speed, handling and other performance issues of race.
After ten years of this type of racing, those who were seriously the sport began to build cars exclusively for racing. In these cases, the cars tend to incorporate all the modifications allowed by NASCAR officials. For several years, the body of the cars still look like stock cars racing on time – if only in appearance.
The fact that so many people were attracted to Nascar was not lost on companies wanting to find advertising opportunities. This period of Nascar history marks the beginning of full-time jobs as drivers, promoters and pit crew of NASCAR racing. The first companies that used the advertising opportunities were largely the automakers, but the decade of 1970 saw a marked increase in the number of companies that sponsored racers.
Some NASCAR fans are not tried and true that there is a single Nascar racing circuit, but the fact is that there are several circuits sanctioned by the parent organization. Some major events are televised and it is likely that this has created the number of fans that follow the sport so closely.
The large number of fans has created a reputation for many NASCAR drivers. Drivers not only earn their living by racing, many are also the spokespersons of the products and companies, so their status even more profitable Nascar.
No doubt that NASCAR has a huge following. Most people have heard of Nascar and even those who see the sport can name some of the most successful pilots. And it started because two men realized the potential of a racing organization to oversee the sport.
